ORACLE DBA – ACTIVITY CHECKLISTon DAILY/WEEKLY/MONTHLY/NIGHTLY
Aim:
This activity checklist is for Oracle DBA to perform the complete health check report of production databases on Daily/Weekly/Monthly basis as per the requirement.
DAILY CHECKLIST

Oracle Database instance is running or not
select name,open_mode from V$database; Note: Check the Oracle databases are running or not, in case if it is not running then startup DB

Database Listener is running or not.
lsnrctl status Note: Run listener status on OS terminal & verify database listener is running or not, if it is not running then start the listener also if you have multiple listener configure verify & start the entire listener.

Check any session blocking the other session
select * from V$lock; Note: Run block_session.sql to verify is there any session blocking another session if yes then kills the session by using the alter system kill session ‘,<serial#>'

Check the alert log for any database error
Go to the default alert log location & verify <alert_.log> file Note: If you find any error related to Oracle database then resolve it ASAP

Check is there any dbms jobs run & check the status of the same
select * from dba_jobs; Note: Verify all the dbms job running successfully & failed jobs, if any of the job fail then follow dbms_job_troubleshooting document.

Check the Top session using more Physical I/O

Check the number of log switch per hour in database

Run the statpack report
Note: Run the statpack twice in a day to collect database statistics & compare it with previous statistics.

Check the SQL query consuming lot of resources

Follow the Sql Tuning troubleshooting.

Detect Lock Objects

Check the Table fragmented

Check the Chaining & Migrated Rows
SELECT chain_cnt, round(chain_cnt/num_rows*100,2) pct_chained, avg_row_len, pct_free , pct_used FROM user_tables WHERE table_name = 'ROW_MIG_CHAIN_DEMO'; Note: Find the chaining & migrated rows in the table and follow the remove_chaning_migrated_rows document to remove the same.

Check the size of tables & check weather it need to partition or not

Check for Block corruption

Check the tables without PK

Check the frequently load objects & place them in separate tablespace & in cache
select OWNER, NAME||' - '||TYPE object, LOADS from v$db_object_cache where LOADS > 3 and type in ('PACKAGE','PACKAGE BODY','FUNCTION','PROCEDURE') order by LOADS desc; Note: Check the object which needs to pin most the time. So we can place this object in separate tablespace as well as in keep cache.

Check the free space at O/s Level
Check the document of Stats_OS_level to check the free space at O/s Level & compare it with the threshold limit.

Check the CPU, Memory usage at O/s level define the threshold for the same & follow the document Stats_OS_level to check the stats at O/s Level & compare it with the threshold limit

Check the used & free Block (High Water Mark) at object level .

Check the objects reaching to its Max extents

Check free Space in the tablespace

Check open cursor not reaching to the max limit
select max(a.value) as highest_open_cur, p.value as max_open_cur from v$sesstat a, v$statname b, v$parameter p where a.statistic# = b.statistic# and b.name = 'opened cursors current' and p.name= 'open_cursors' group by p.value; Note: Check the Open_cursor.sql to verify open cursor are not reaching to threshold limit. If reaching to threshold limit then increase the value open_cursor using as per requirement

Check locks not reaching to the max lock
Run the script lock.sql to verify locks are not reaching to threshold limit. If reaching to threshold limit then increase the value max_lock using the document Lock_Object

Check free quota limited available of each user with tablespace etc
select * from dba_ts_quotas; or select tablespace_name,username,bytes/1024/1024,max_bytes,blocks/1024/1024,max_blocks from dba_ts_quotas; Note: Check free available quota in the tablespace with username. If it is reaching to the threshold limit then increase the quota limit as per client requirement.

Check I/O of each data file
select v$datafile.name "File_Name", v$filestat.phyrds "Reads", v$filestat.phywrts "Writes" from v$filestat,v$datafile where v$filestat.file# = v$datafile.file#; Note: Check the load on each datafile & manage to balance the load on each datafile.
MONTHLY ACTIVITY

Check is there any dead lock was occurred
Note: Check the “alert log” file to verify if there is dead lock occur while running the application, If any dead lock found then follow the Oracle doc “Dealock” to avoid the same in future.

Check the database size & compare it previous size to find the exact growth of the database
select sum(b.a) "DB SIZE IN GB" from (select sum(bytes)/1024/1024/1024 a from dba_data_files union select sum(bytes)/1024/1024/1024 from dba_temp_files) b; Note: Check the size of db growth & compare with previous for monitoring purpose.

Find tablespace Status, segment management, initial & Max Extents etc from dba_tablespaces
select tablespace_name,INITIAL_EXTENT, NEXT_EXTENT ,MAX_EXTENTS,EXTENT_MANAGEMENT,SEGMENT_SPACE_MANAGEMENT ,STATUS from dba_tablespaces; Note: Check the storage clause of the tbs in database & monitor respectively

Check location of datafile & Used & free space of each datafile
SELECT sysdate, SUBSTR (df.NAME, 1, 40) file_name, df.bytes /1024/1024 allocated_mb, ((df.bytes / 1024 / 1024) - NVL (SUM (dfs.bytes)/1024/1024, 0)) used_mb, NVL (SUM (dfs.bytes) / 1024 / 1024, 0) free_space_mb FROM v$datafile df, dba_free_space dfs WHERE df.file# = dfs.file_id(+) GROUP BY dfs.file_id, df.NAME, df.file#, df.bytes ORDER BY file_name; Note: Check the location of data file & used & free of each datafile.

Check default tablespace & temporary tablespace of each user
select username,default_tablespace,temporary_tablespace,PROFILE from dba_users; Note: Check the each user has no system tablespace as a default tablespace.

Check the Indexes which is not used yet

Check the overall database statistics
Note: Check the statpack_report.sql to find the overall database performance & follow the database performance document to make sure database well optimized.

Tablespace need coalescing
select tablespace_name, percent_extents_coalesced from dba_free_space_coalesced where percent_extents_coalesced <> 100; Note: Check any tablespace need coalescing or not

Trend Analysis of tablespace,
select ts.name, (sum(bytes)/1024/1024)/max(ceil(months_between(sysdate,creation_time))) "AVG. SIZE in MB", (sum(bytes)/1024/1024)/max(ceil(months_between(sysdate,creation_time))) * 3 "Space for Next 3 MONTH in MB" from sys.v_$datafile dt, v$tablespace ts where dt.ts# = ts.ts# group by ts.name; Note: Check the growth trend of the tablespace.
NIGHTLY ACTIVITY

Analyzed the objects routinely.
exec dbms_stats.gather_schema_stats(ownname=>'MIR',cascade => TRUE); Note: Run the above command to check analysis & while there is less activity in the night to collect the statistics of the Objects so that Oracle optimizers can you the best execution plan.

Check the Index need to Rebuild
select NAME, HEIGHT, DEL_LF_ROWS, DISTINCT_KEYS, ROWS_PER_KEY, BLKS_GETS_PER_ACCESS from INDEX_STATS; Note: Check the indexes which is required to rebuild then run the script index_rebuil.sql to rebuild the indexes

Check the tablespace for respective Tables & Indexes
select owner,segment_name,segment_type,tablespace_name from dba_segments where owner='OWNER_NAME' order by segment_type; Note: Check all the index and table are on separate tablespace. Follow the move_index_seprate_tablespace document to place the index on separate tablespace. Do this activity in the night.

Check the No. of DML operation perform after last analysis
select inserts,updates,deletes,table_owner,table_name from sys.dba_tab_modifications where table_name=<’TABLE_NAME'>;

Check the No. of Date of Last Analysis & No. of Record in the Table
select TABLE_NAME, NUM_ROWS, LAST_ANALYZED from dba_tables where table_name=<'TABLE_NAME'>;

How to determine the table is required to analysis or not
Note : Compare the Number of rows, with no of insert, delete & update records, if this is more than 10% of number of rows then this table having the statle stats & need to analysis again

Find fragmentation in the tables
